Baxter, the Pig Who Wanted to Be Kosher
by Laurel Snyder, illustrated by David Goldin
Grades PreK-2 32 pages Tricycle Press August 2010 Hardcover

When Baxter the Pig meets a man heading to a festive Shabbat meal, he embarks on a journey to be included in the celebration - which, he is led to believe, requires him to become kosher. Only after Baxter ingests jars of kosher pickles and loaves of challah does he learn about the true meaning of Shabbat and some of its traditions.

The smart dialogue in the story corrects some of the misconceptions about the holiday and what it means to be kosher by responding to Baxter’s comments in a way that effortlessly educates readers about the religion.

This charming story with equally charming illustrations enables readers to learn about the Jewish holiday called Shabbat right alongside an adorable pig who shares the same goal.
