Bear Flies High
by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Adrian Reynolds
Ages 3-6 32 pages Bloomsbury USA September 2009 Hardcover

A bear sings on a beach all day, “doo bee doo, doo bee doo, doo bee doodily doo.” He watches seagulls flying high up in the bright blue sky, “swoopy swoop, swoopy swoop, swoopy swoopity swoop.” The bear runs into a gaggle of clever children who help him fulfill his dream of flying like the birds.

Infectious joy permeates this goofy and utterly delightful book - I can’t imagine anyone not having their mood lifted by reading Bear Flies High. It practically begs to be read out loud and have everyone in the vicinity join in singing the lilting refrain.

Adrian Reynolds’s gorgeous and glowing illustrations appear to be backlit. Bear’s adorable features and shaggy body are perfectly envisioned, and the inclusion of children of all skin colors is a nice touch. The sunny illustrations and bouncy, happy text work very well together to create a fun and charming book.
