Bear in Sunshine
by Stella Blackstone, illustrated by Debbie Harter
Baby-preschool 24 pages Barefoot Books November 2002 Board book

Stella Blackstone's lilting, almost melodic rhyming text and Debbie Harter's curlicued illustrations adorning each page with whimsy in watercolor, pen and ink, and crayon make Bear in Sunshine a fabulous board book introduction to the seasons - and to the adventures and fun to be had no matter the weather.

The eponymous brown bear of cuddly, comfortingly oversized polar-bear proportions rollicks along to the turn of the seasons' cycle - playing with a toy sailboat in a lively stream when the sun shines, singing in the rain, flying a kite on windy days, skating when it's icy, painting in the mist, and more.

A four-panel, two-page spread at the end of the book shows Bear at play in each labeled season. Each depicts the same background - a hill topped by a small tree - cloaked in the showers of spring, drenched in summer sun, amid fall's blowing leaves, and blanketed by winter snows. Small children will warm immediately to Bear and his weather-appropriate gamboling, and parents will enjoy equally narrating his romps.
