Jean Jullien’s (This is Not a Book) latest story is told in an oversize board book with one double gatefold. The pages focus on two words--before or after--but the illustrations allow the reader to predict what happens next.
Appearing beside the word before is a dirty cat. When the child turns the page, they see what the cat looks like after they have finished cleaning themselves. Another easy illustration to guess is the chicken coming out of the egg.
There are several open-ended examples, though, which have many answers. Will the before and after of the person with long hair show long and short hair, or straight and curly, black and blonde--or maybe no hair, or hair with a hat on top? Are the yellow, thin rectangles straw, grass, or something to eat?
This is the type of book toddlers, preschoolers, and their parents can have fun with because the artwork makes you laugh, and the turning of the page allows for interaction and suspense.
