The Berenstain Bears are back, this time presenting rers with a Valentine’s Day tale. The story takes place a few weeks before Valentine’s Day, which just so happens to be the same day as Cousin Cora’s wedding. The request for Sister to be a flower girl in the wedding, along with the excitement of the annual school exchange of Valentine’s Day cards, make it a special day that the entire family looks forward to celebrating.
I do not think there is such as a things as a “bad” Berenstain Bears book, but for some reason this one seems a bit more disjointed than most. Sister is asked to be a flower girl just a few days before the wedding, the dress arrives, and she is scolded for gossiping about the fact that her Cousin Cora was previously engaged to one bear but decided to marry another. Of course, the reading of any book in this series requires the suspension of reality, but this book includes an unusually high number of inaccurate and fragmented details that are not necessary to further the story and therefore become an unnecessary distraction.
The fact that the book includes some very cheerful stickers, a Valentine’s Day-themed pullout poster, and a few Berenstain Bears Valentine’s Day cards is a nice addition to the presentation of this book, which accounts for the one-star boost for this review. Notwithstanding this bonus material, unfortunately, the book would have received 2 stars, and it certainly would not be anywhere near the top of my wish list.
