The Best Birthday Ever! By Me (Lana Kittie)
by Charise Mericle Harper
Ages 3-6 32 pages Hyperion January 2011 Hardcover

Lana Kittie, the narrator of this picture book, is getting ready to celebrate her birthday. Like any smart birthday girl, Kittie has a game plan to make the occasion the best party ever.

As you follow along in this book, you discover the ins and outs of making birthday invitations, selecting your birthday outfit, welcoming guests to the party, creating a cake and planning games. Since it is important to know the proper etiquette involved in blowing out birthday candles, opening presents and saying “good-bye” to the guests, the thorough little kitten includes that information also.

Don’t be misled by all this good advice. This is a humorous book, so Kittie’s suggestions are intended to be funny. For instance, she says that it is not a good idea to greet your guests by saying, “Oh good, you brought a present. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”

When opening gifts rather than saying, “Yuck! Underpants. Is that all? That’s the worst present ever! I already have a million of those”, it is better to be appreciative and say, “Wow! Underpants! I love underpants. Thank you! I will wear them every day!”

As Kittie practices being the perfect birthday hostese with her stuffed animals being the perfect birthday hostess, you and your child will find plenty of silly things to laugh about. At the same time, the message is quite clear. To have a successful birthday party it is important to be a thoughtful hostess and take good care of your guests.
