Edgar Award-winning Beyond: A Ghost Story author Graham McNamee, also known for his award-winning young adult books Acceleration and Bonechiller, is adept at weaving complex tales of thrilling mystery. This Junior Library Guild Selection is inspired by a true story from McNamee's family.
What an unexpected nightmare to awake in the middle of the night, in the middle of the road, not knowing how you got there. For Jane, sleepwalking out of the house has become a regular occurrence following a brain injury. But this isn't the only unfortunate side effect she must deal with as a result of her death and subsequent revival.
It becomes evident at a young age that Jane's life is not entirely in her own hands as life-threatening accidents and near-misses turn into a series of serious events. Concerns of suicide attempts are reasonable assessments, but there's always some little thing that seems to validate what happens as an accident or unexplainable. How can Jane say that something evil keeps trying to kill her? Who would believe her? She doesn't believe herself, even though as events begin to pick up, her chance for a long, normal life seems to be quickly disappearing.
Beyond is a nonstop dark tale of the indefinable mixed with a healthy dose of horror-like mystery. Readers who like similar works such as Deep and Dark and Dangerous: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn or Elements of Eden (a paranormal novella series) will enjoy Graham McNamee's latest work. This is a page-turner only made more enjoyable with a big hot cocoa and a fluffy blanket to curl up in and read.
