Ole Konnecke's 20 page board book The Big Book of Words and Pictures
by Ole Kennecke teaches basic words in a basic, whimsical style. The art invites comparisons to Richard Scarry because the style is reminiscient of his anthropormorphic depiction of animals. Yet, unlike Scarry, the illustrations are relatively sparse, and the various animals don't interact with objects as frequently as in Scarry's books.
There's a very funny sequence in the vehicle section about a mother stork and her toddler, who is seen growing up and progressing to evermore sophisticated vehicles until the inevitable old man in a wheel chair sums up the sequence.
Each page features a general theme: baby's room, bathroom, kitchen, living room, tools, gardening, wildlife, marine life, flying machines and flying creatures, vehicles, musical instruments, sports, numbers, letters, circus, colors, body parts, movement, and emotions.
Some of the pictures will be recognizable to toddlers, while some are not so commonplace. The vocabulary words are many, and while the font is large enough for parental eyes, little children might wish they were larger.
