The Dr. Seuss "I Can Read" classic Big Dog Little Dog by P.D. Eastman was published in 1973; today, more than thirty years later, the praise for the book continues. Just when you thought the story could not get any better, it does, with this updated version that is part of the “Bright and Early Board Books” collection. This line of books makes Seuss & Co. classics more kid-friendly by shortening the story, shrinking it to a pocket-sized edition, and using chunky pages that can be easily turned. The classic story, along with this enhanced packaging, makes it an appealing purchase and wonderful addition to any young child’s collection of books.
Fred and Ted are, you guessed it, a big dog and a little dog. While these dogs are friends, as a child I was drawn to it because I assigned my sister to play the big dog character and assigned myself to be the little dog. The book not only teaches basic word comprehension but also introduces children to the concept of opposites by, for example, explaining that one dog is wet while the other is dry. It also teaches colors as Fred uses green paint to work on a house and Ted sticks with red.
Big Dog Little Dog is a simple, sweet story that not only teaches and entertains but can be thrown into your bag for carrying with ease. The fact the story is a classic one enjoyed by generations of children is certainly not an accident, and it will likely continue to provide amusement for years to come.
