As young readers get older, they start to gravitate toward stories and characters they can identify with. This seems to be opening more to younger and younger readers.
Bike On, Bear! is an excellent example. Bear is a smart, hardworking kid. Good at pretty much everything, except riding a bike. Some kids catch on to things easy, until they run into something where they are not immediately good. And that can be frustrating.
Bear tackles this new problem with the same diligence as everything else in his life, but learns a valuable lesson about letting go control and jumping in feet first. Or paws first.
Bike On, Bear! is good, smartly written with fun illustrations. It’s also terrific for the young overachiever in your life.
