Every animal that appears in this board book is a single-line sketch by Pablo Picasso. (The sketchbooks they come from appear on the last two pages). They are drawn in black and include the basic shape of the animal.
Children may be able to guess the flamingo because only one leg appears, but they may not know the grasshopper shape because it’s obscure, and the horse shape may garner a lot of guesses because of its configuration. Facts below the animals provide hints.
Some of these drawings could be replicated by children in kindergarten. The last double-page spread can be used as a recognition game. The one-page biography about the artist explain Picasso’s inspiration for the sketches.
I like this book because children will feel good when they guess the animal identities, and their imaginations will get a work-out.
