“When the sky grows dark
And the moon glows bright,
Everyone goes to sleep…
…except for the watchful owl.”
These lines from A Book of Sleep set the stage for a wonderful new bedtime book for young children in which a wide-awake owl acts as a guide to the sleeping animal kingdom.
On a starlit night, the owl travels from place to place showing the reader how different animals prefer to sleep. For instance, pandas sleep in quiet comfort while elephants are noisy; horses sleep standing up, while sea critters swim in their sleep. Some animals sleep alone, some huddle in groups.
The spare and well-chosen text acts as a perfect frame for some of the most beautiful artwork I’ve ever seen in a children’s book. Children should find the soothing text and gorgeous artwork of sleeping animals very conducive to falling asleep themselves.
Korean-born artist Il Sung Na has created a feast for the eyes here; the textured, mellow and utterly lovely artwork captures your attention from the very first page. This gentle and beautiful book feels like a modern classic. Highly recommended!
