The Bravest Woman in America
by Marissa Moss, illustrated by Andrea U'Ren
Ages 7-11 32 pages Tricycle Press July 2011 Hardcover

The Bravest Woman in America is a collection of dog stories set to bright, vibrant colors, and a dazzling display of words of a poem about aspects of a dog’s life make up each captivating page of this book.

Ida’s father was a lighthouse keeper; when she was young, she learned to row the boat out to the island to tend to the lighthouse. Later, when the government decided that a full-time keeper was needed, the family moved to the island.

As the oldest child in the family, her father depended on her to help. She grew strong and responsible. One night when she was only 16, her father became ill. Ida tended the lighthouse and rescued four young boys struggling in the water after their boat capsized.

The author’s note explains how Ida eventually took over her father’s responsibilities as the lighthouse keeper and continued to rescue people until she was 63 years old. According to Harper’s Weekly, the New York Tribune and Putnam’s Magazine, she was recognized as “the bravest woman in America.”

Andrea U’Ren’s ink, acrylic and watercolor illustrations make Ida’s story come to life. The vibrant colors and use of light attract the reader to each page, highlighting the intensity of the situations and constant movement throughout the story.

While the author does quote sources for the “bravest woman” title, others are not listed. Some of the immediate situations may be fictionalized. Nevertheless, the story is written to engage the reader in the immediacy of each scene, creating an biographical story which will spark critical thinking. Recommended.
