Maeve on the Red Carpet (Beacon Street Girls)
by Annie Bryant
Ages 9-12 221 pages B*tween Productions April 2007 Paperback

Maeve is disappointed that she will be the only one of the Beacon Street Girls left in town for the winter holiday. Everyone else has great plans for doing something away from home. Maeve’s luck turns around when her father announces that his theatre will be hosting a film camp, and that Maeve will be attending. Maeve is devoted to the idea of someday being a Hollywood star; this could be her big chance.

Maeve will have to learn to deal with her little brother, Sam, and his constant intrusions. She will also encounter false friendship, jealousy and pride during this camp, make some new friends, and learn the value of true friendship.

Annie Bryant’s short novel presents a realistic picture of a film camp and the activities involved in its operation. A study guide is included as an appendix, as is a glossary for the many filmmaking terms included in the text. This is a delightful story about new friendships and old friendships, about old dreams and new dreams. The kid-friendly website for this series, www.beaconstreetgirls.com, offers additional activities and ideas about these characters.
