The Cat in the Hat (Party Edition)
by Dr. Seuss
Grades 1-3 72 pages Random House March 1957 Hardcover

As if there were really any need to review the classic The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss and give it its well-earned (not to mention historically consistent) five stars. Two young children (“Sally and I”) are sitting at home (unsupervised) while it rains outside, with little to do to occupy their time. That all changes when a cat bursts in the door to entertain the children, only to be chastised by their pet fish for causing such a commotion.

The visiting cat (dressed in a hat) attempts to balance household items but ends up dropping them and creating quite a mess. To make matters worse, he brings in “Thing One” and “Thing Two,” who add to the chaos by running wild through the home and leaving a path of destruction behind. Just before the pandemonium can escalate further, the pet fish alerts the children that their mother is about to return.

The Cat in the Hat has one more trick up his sleeve as he pulls out a cleaning machine to return every item to its original position. He finishes his work and departs, taking Thing One and Thing Two along with him and leaving no evidence of the events of the preceding few hours. The children are left with just the memory of the fun-filled turmoil and the question of whether they will tell their mother about their uninvited guests.

The Cat in the Hat is a classic story that has won its way into the hearts of many adoring fans and will likely continue to do so for generations to come.
