In this counting caper, while Farmer Brown naps (“1 farmer sleeping”) next to his goldfish tank, the animals hatch a plot. The high-spirited but good-natured hi-jinks that follow involve Duck (“2 feet creeping”) and the others (“4 chickens standing by” on “3 buckets piled high”) breaking into the house and taking the Farmer’s goldfish. They leave a note (“Gone Fishing”)…but where have they taken the fish?
Click, Clack, Splish, Splash: A Counting Adventure features the same barnyard menagerie that romped through Doreen Cronin’s other books, including the Caldecott Honor book Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type and Click, Clack, Quackity-Quack.
This is a good addition to the counting books on the market, and its whimsical (if somewhat thin) plot line will amuse children. The quirky illustrations by Betsy Lewin, reminiscent of Sandra Boynton’s work, are perfectly suited for this light-hearted barnyard caper.
