City Dog, Country Frog
by Mo Willems, illustrated by Jon J. Muth
Grades PreK-2 64 pages Hyperion June 2010 Hardcover

When City Dog travels to the country, he meets a new if rather unlikely friend: Country Frog. In the spring, when the two form a bond, Country Frog teaches City Dog “frog” games like hopping and croaking.

Later, during the summer, City Dog returns the favor by teaching Country Frog to bark and fetch. But when fall arrives and the two meet again, Country Frog is so tired he suggests the two just sit on their favorite rock and remember all the fun they had earlier in the year.

With winter’s arrival, frog disappears. Although City Dog looks and looks, he can’t find his country companion. Spring’s return also marks a sad change for City Dog. Waiting by their favorite rock, he realizes that Country Frog is not going to show up. But, then friendship blooms again when a little chipmunk hops up.

“What are you doing!” he asks the dog.

“Waiting for a friend,” replies City Dog sadly. “But you’ll do.”

Using the seasons to chart the development of a friendship, Mo Willems doesn’t use a lot of words, but he certainly gets the idea across. Although they may see this story in different ways, both youngsters and adults will find this an intriguing picture book.
