Children are shown circles of different sizes, colors, and numbers and asked what they could be. “What can a big red circle be?” When the page is turned, you see an apple and a balloon. The drawings are completed with the addition of straight or curved lines, triangles, and squares or rectangles.
One page stands out: the author writes, “This white circle could be inside…,” and the answer is a ring and a camera (which does not look like a cellphone camera). I have never read a shape book that mentioned the inside of an object.
I also thought it was clever that the back cover of the book is used as a page of the book. And just as Yonezu did in the book Squares, half the circles are drawn and half are diecut holes.
When reading this book to toddlers and preschoolers, take the time to practice the colors, shapes, and numbers that appear on the page.
