Clackers take the shape of an animal, and their pages - if opened and closed quickly enough - make the sound of two objects being tapped together.
In this book (the series also includes Bunny, Duck, and Monkey), five animals are partially hidden in the jungle. The parrot is under the leaves, the monkey is in the mango tree, and the tiger is peeking out from the flowers. Crocodile is looking for her mother, though.
The questions on each double page spread encourage children to look closely at the illustrations and to answer a yes/no question (Is she under the shiny leaves?). Rinaldo uses colors in unexpected ways in this book. The grass is pink or purple, the sky yellow or orange. The spider has a purple striped body, and the sand is dotted with white X marks.
Words such as under, in, and by help children learn the meaning of a few prepositions, and adjectives such as shiny, feathery, rough, and tall help children understand texture and the identifiable characteristics of the animals and plants mentioned in this book.
The book ends with a happy reunion, with the two crocodiles playing in the water near the area where the mother crocodile was found.
This book is sturdy with a wipe-able surface, yet the pages contain a soft spongy middle. Babies can grasp this book with their hands by holding onto a handle that resembles the crocodile’s tail or by placing their finger in the hole that is part of the handle.
