“Cleo wakes, Cleo winks. Cleo yawns, Cleo blinks.”
Little orange kitten Cleo rests in a chair. As Cleo runs downstairs, she hears a sound and realizes there is someone else in the house. She looks around and finds a little puppy in a basket. She is introduced to the puppy by a little blond-haired boy, “Cleo, this is Caspar. Come and say hello.” As Cleo sniffs, Caspar barks, causing Cleo to hiss and say “NO!” just before running away.
Cleo is hiding high in the tree when the little blond boy comes over to her and says, “Caspar’s sleeping, Cleo! Come and talk to me.” At this point there seems to be a piece missing, as the story then continues with Cleo going inside and telling Caspar he can stay. “I’ll drink my milk while you’re asleep, then you and I can play.”
Cleo and Caspar is a delightful book filled with colorful full-page illustrations. A fast-paced read with catchy rhymes, it is sure to become a favorite. Although there is a missed opportunity to teach about friendship and sharing, the end result with Cleo and Caspar rolling around in the leaves certainly implies it. Cleo and Caspar is part of the Cleo series of books – good news for those little listeners who can’t get enough of Cleo’s adventures!
