Baby - preschool 24 pages Bloomsbury February 2007 Board book

Start learning all the letters of the alphabet with Coco, the photogenic yellow chick.

Like a cherry sits on a sundae, Coco is topped off with a pink silky bow. In this book, Coco, the toy chick, introduces the letters of the alphabet through short lines of rhyming verse. But she makes the pages personal - she uses her green hula hoop, her red bike, and her striped kite to assist with letter and word illustration purposes. As she goes through the alphabet, she also celebrates herself, demonstrating her juggling skills, her dance kick, and her healthy eating habits. But she doesn’t hide her flaws and weaknesses. She’s scared of monsters (her eyes literally become google-eyes when she sees monster shadows), she’s never tired when its naptime, and she’s lacking elbows.

These yellow toy chicks are very camera friendly. This could be why the author has placed Coco inside homemade dioramas - and there is a wide range of diorama settings for Coco to star in. Coco can be seen lying on the beach, standing on top of an igloo, and eating soup in grandma’s kitchen. Grandma is not the only special person shown in this book. Coco stands on the red carpet and meets royalty, and on the page “V is for Valentine- will you be mine?” Coco offers roses and chocolates to someone. Could this be her boyfriend? There is one departure from the usual in this Coco book: the author has included a blue chick among all the yellow ones.

This book offers so much more than the alphabet. This tiny toy, in her assorted dioramas, just cannot stop entertaining readers. The curious can go to www.cocothechick.com to read much more about the author and Coco.
