When all the crocodile eggs hatch, the baby crocs crawl onto the river beach - except for Cornelius; he walks upright!
As you can imagine, the view from atop two legs is quite different from the one seen down on all fours. “I can see beyond the bushes,” Cornelius says. But none of the other crocodiles seem to care.
Discouraged, this leggy lizard leaves the river and finds a friendly monkey with talents of his own. He can stand on his head and hang from his tail! Cornelius, who isn’t afraid to be different, learns these tricks, too. But will he be able to impress his croc friends?
Leo Lionni wrote and illustrated more than forty picture books for children during his lifetime and was recipient of the coveted Caldecott Honor four times. In Cornelius , Lionni relates the simple message that it’s okay to be different and sometimes even fun.
This version is apparently a shortened take on his original, which was originally published in 1983. Lionni died in October1999 at the age of eighty-nine. His memorable works are still available from Random House.
