When Cow and her four animal friends visit the “other mountain,” they discover a new appreciation for home.
After Cow asks her mom for permission, she ventures out to look for munchier grass. She doesn’t go alone, though. She convinces the other animals to come along with her by telling them everything will be better on the other mountain.
As they make their way to the other mountain they sing, “The grass is munchier. The bugs are crunchier. The water is sploshier. The mud is sloshier. The honey is gooier.” But their expectations go unfulfilled when they realize that Cow’s predictions weren’t true.
Reminiscent of the song The Bear Went Over the Mountain, the friends head back home by going up and down the mountain, but with a new spring in their step. They now know home is the best place for them.
Originally published in 1963, this Little Golden Book Classic has a rhythm that will appeal to children who enjoy repetition and circular stories. Although some of the double-page spreads fall into the gutter of the book, it doesn’t interfere with the readability of the text or illustrations.
