Ages 2-6 32 pages Hyperion January 2010 Hardcover

Vanilla Cupcake feels terribly drab when compared to his siblings who are all dressed up with fancy frosting and other colorful decorations. When no one picks him and he's left on the plate because he is too plain, Vanilla begins crying.

Enter Candle, who tells Vanilla he knows exactly how the ignored cupcake feels. No one wanted to use Candle on a birthday cake because he is too small, too straight, and has a dull green color. Putting their heads together, this odd couple comes up with a solution to their mutual problem.

Along with this clever and cute story, this picture book also features a recipe for making plain vanilla cupcakes and buttercream frosting. You'll have to figure out the decorations yourself!

With talking animals and other animated non-human characters, this whimsical tale about a cupcake and candle isn't that outrageous. It raises some interesting issues about one's appearance and self-image. Depending on the age of the child, this might be something you wish to discuss.
