In Japan, if it’s cute, it’s considered kawaii. Cute Yummy Time is all about having fun and being creative with your food. Use flaxseeds, pecans, and pumpkin seeds to turn slices of apple into Flop-Eared Dogs Salad, or add a cheese-shaped head and carrot-shaped beak to transform a bun into a swan. Vegetables can be arranged to give an egg salad wrap a face or a quiche the look of an owl.
Divided into five parts, all seventy recipes in this book can be created in less than thirty minutes and with healthy ingredients found in most grocery stores. Some recipes, such as Cow Cheeseburgers and Hot Dog Croc, make one to two servings, while recipes like Evil Pumpkin Soup and Eggplant Lasagna make three to four servings. To find a cute breakfast item to serve in the morning or a plate of cute dessert animals to bring to a party, readers can search the alphabetical index in the back of the book or under the appropriate category in the table of contents in the front of the book.
Although there are ten dessert recipes in this book, the author doesn’t include any “junk food or candy” in her recipes. Many of the recipes that appear in her book use egg whites, fat-free dairy products, whole wheat flour, and skinless or lean meats.
Appearing alongside each recipe is a color photograph of the finished creation and a few kawaii-inspired drawings. In addition, every recipe is accompanied by a small imaginative story that ties into the recipes and features the author and her cat, Basil.
Designer, blogger and creator of cute food La Carmina has written two other books on Japanese culture and food.
