Ages 5-8 32 pages Harpercollins October 2006 Paperback

This story, based on the 2006 movie, is adapted from E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. A note in the front of the book helps parents and their new reader get the most out of Wilbur Finds a Friend, which is part of the I Can Read Series 2.

Wilbur finds himself moving to the Zuckerman’s farm, and he is scared and nervous. A barn is a very big place, and it can be scary as well. However, when he gets there it has lots of animals - geese, cows, even a horse. Wilbur tries to make friends with them but they aren’t really that welcoming to a “pig”.

At last, Wilbur finds a true friend in a wonderful spider who helps him see that life on the farm won’t be so bad after all. In fact, after just hearing a voice and responding, Wilbur is surprised that the voice turns out to be Charlotte, a small, friendly spider. Charlotte helps the others see how nice Wilbur is so they can all be friends. When she writes in her web “SOME PIG,” all the animals decide to also be Wilbur’s friends as well.

Adapted from E.B. White’s original classic, this entry in the I Can Read 2 series encourages children who know the story and have seen the movie to want to learn to read. With this book - and a little help - they will be able to read. The story can’t get much better, and the simple, basic wording of this adaptation allows for successful reading by new readers as well as fluent readers. Developing readers will gain confidence with the success they’ll feel reading this book.
