Laden’s (Peek-a-Who?; Ready, Set, Go!) new board book is brilliant, but it should have more pages. I can see fathers and children enjoying this story together.
The book is split in half. The top pages reveal a variety of heads and torsos. The bottom halves show different kinds of legs. The book can be read in any order. Children can build many funny creatures including a Daddy strong legs (half skeleton and half elephant) or a Daddy hairy Legs (half pirate octopus and half gorilla). There is only one human daddy and he appears at the end of the book (Daddy’s own legs).
If the pages are read in order, pairs or groups of words rhyme. The illustrations are set against bright, solid backgrounds of colour and, on every page, a father is seen interacting with a youngster or two. The bear father reads, the skeleton dad dances, and the human dad gives rides on his shoulders.
At the end of this book, children can be asked what kind of legs their dad has, and which animals’ legs best describe their own legs.
