One day, little Daniel discovers a small white egg on the ground. He takes the egg to show his friend, Alex, who thinks it must be an ostrich with a long, long neck, but Daniel doesn’t agree; he believes “a small animal will come out of this egg.”
Meg thinks it will be an alligator with big teeth, so large that Daniel will have to move out of his house, but Daniel says “no, we won’t need to move.” According to Tammy, the egg will hatch to reveal a noisy, quacking duck, but Daniel insists this will be the perfect pet. Patiently the children wait for the egg to hatch and when it does, they see right away that Daniel was right: “It’s the best lizard ever!”
The illustrations are delightful, each page containing text in Spanish and English so young readers can compare the two, a fanciful tale about possibilities and believing in the best results. Sharing their ideas and curiosity about the egg, all the children are delighted when Daniel gets the perfect pet.
At the back of the book, the suggested activity is a riddle, taking the story beyond reading and into action. Most of this author’s stories are about animals and nature, and illustrator G. Brian Karas has perfectly captured the spirit of the tale in his quirky, colorful drawings. Level 2 in the Green Light Reader Series.
