Grades 1-5 40 pages Tricycle Press January 2011 Hardcover

A Dazzling Display of Dogs is a collection of dog stories set to bright, vibrant colors, and a dazzling display of words of a poem about aspects of a dog’s life make up each captivating page of this book.

Each poem represents a snapshot of a different moment in the life of dogs. There are poems about dogs chasing bubbles, walking, eating and getting ready to sleep. There is even a poem about the different combinations of dog breeds.

The poems introduce many lively words to describe a dog’s life and activities. They also point out some frustrating aspects of a dog’s life, such as the poem “White Collar Blues,” in which a dog has to wear a collar cone so it doesn’t have access to an injury, or funny aspects of a dog’s life like in “Cassandra riding in the car,” which is a poem about a dog farting in the car.

While the poems by author Betsy Franco are observant, fun and silly, what really makes the poems pop are the illustrations by Michael Wertz, who ingeniously weaves the words of the poem into the illustrations, creating a dynamic poem that will have children moving their heads and turning the book to read some of the poems. Each page is unique, brightly colored and vivid.

A Dazzling Display of Dogs is a visually delightful adventure in words for young readers as they make their way through the dizzying display of words on each page. Five stars.
