You're Different and That's Super
by Carson Kressley, illustrated by Jared Lee
ages 4-8 64 pages Simon & Schuster October 2005 Hardcover

I’m a sucker for children’s books that teach kids tolerance and acceptance and to live their lives with authenticity, and I’m an even bigger sucker when the story is delightful and the illustrations are stand-out. You’re Different and That’s Super is the first children’s book by Carson Kressley, former Ralph Lauren stylist and current “miracle worker” of fashion on the hit show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Yes, he’s the one with the long blond hair, and did I mention that he is also a nationally ranked equestrian?

So it is no wonder Kressley has chosen the world of horses to tell his adorable and humorous story of Trumpet, a horse different from the rest. Trumpet, you see, has a horn, and it makes him sad to be different, especially when his differences make him the target of other horses’ teasing and negativity. But his difference is what ends up making him so special, and he learns not only to appreciate it but to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! In fact, you could say this story is Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer with horses, and the comparison only makes the book even more enchanting.

This charming tale about the struggle to be who we are is accompanied by renowned equine artist Jared Lee’s whimsical black and white line illustrations. Kids will love the silly horses and revel in Trumpet’s discovery of the power of finding our personal identity, rather than shying away from who we are or conforming to the crowd.

You’re Different and That’s Super is a great debut children’s book and the perfect gift for kids who feel a little bit different from their peers. It will help them celebrate who they are, a lesson they will treasure for the rest of their lives. Because, after all, we are all different in one way or another, aren’t we?
