In Janee Trasler’s (Bedtime for Chickies, Pottytime for Chickies) new board book, we discover the three young chickens are picky eaters. They don’t want drippy spaghetti and meatballs, spicy tacos, or chewy vegetables.
Their friends Sheep, Donkey and Pig won’t give them what they really want (something chocolate chippy), though, until they take one bite of their supper. After one reluctant taste, the chicks go “mmmmmmm” and ask for more. At the end of the book, the chicks think they are too full for dessert, but they manage to take one more “tiny taste.”
This story, told in rhyme, is humorous because it shows the chicks doing silly things with their food and napkins (one chick wears spaghetti on his head, another rides a burrito while waving his napkin). Despite their antics, this mealtime story hints at table manners (wash your wings/use your napkin/pass the carrots if you please), and it confirms that meals, including desserts, are best when eaten with friends.
