Dot is one of those kids who can be found inside on the computer. If she’s not tapping her laptop or touching her tablet, she’s tweeting messages or tagging online photographs. Her pet gets no attention because she’d rather surf and share on the internet than play with her dog.
Her preferred way to communicate with family and friends is through a cell phone or a monitor. But when Dot’s mom tells her to go outside and “Reboot! Recharge! Restart!”, Dot remembers that she can have fun outside, too.
Berger’s traditional media and Photoshop illustrations show Dot doing a different kind of tapping, touching, tweeting and tagging. Activities that previously incorporated technology are replaced with activities that involve wildlife, nature and having fun interacting with others while outside.
The repetition and rhythm of this quick read will appeal to children, but the message can be utilized by teens and adults as well: Don’t let your computer dominate your life.
