The Drum Calls Softly

Ages 4-8 120 pages Red Deer Press November 2008 Hardcover

This union of written and spoken word is a charming and unique idea, and the two come together here to create a thoroughly magical experience. The Drum Calls Softly is a bilingual picture book, with text rendered in both English and Cree and backed by traditional drumming and music on the accompanying CD. Aimed at a young audience (ages 4 to 8), there really is no defining number for such an unusual item.

“Have you danced the round dance yet?” asks the narrator.
“Dance in circles around the drum
Seek the magic and it will come.
Shut your eyes so you mjight hear
That song is sung to draw you near.”
Without a doubt, the rhythmic performance of native Cree drummers adds new dimensions to this simple invitation to friendship. Indeed, the round dance is an all-inclusive activity that encourages multi-cultural participation.

There is no linear story told in this book; rather, a sensation is evoked. The experience of joining in the dance, feeling the union of community, recognizing the dream within reality – all of these things are conjured within the reader/listener as part of an overall experience that is deeper than words.

Author David Bouchard is well known for his award-winning children’s books, which include Nokum Is My Teacher and Aboriginal Carol. For this project, Bouchard teams with newcomer Shelley Willier, a member of the Sucker Creek First Nation Reserve, to put words to the dance in tune with the rhythm of the heart.

Breathtaking and imaginative illustrations by Jim Poitras complement the words and music as perfectly as if they came together at the beginning of time. The overwhelming landscapes and colorful skies take center stage, while silhouetted humans blend into the natural world below. The simple designs are full of whimsy and secrets, however, so be sure to look closely at each painting.

The Drum Calls Softly is so much more than a book or a CD. This is an important addition to any child’s library - to any library!
