It is amazing that a few adjustments to a classic Seuss story, including shrinking the size of the size, reducing the number of pages and amount of text, and adding some flaps, textures, and interactive surprises, can actually enhance a story that already has an existing fan base dating back fifty years.
Happy Birthday, Baby! is a great introduction to the world of Seuss and will likely have the youngest readers looking forward to reading the full version of the story as their reading comprehension (and attention span) matures.
Baby highlights the key points of the original story, which focuses on how a particular town celebrates the birthday of its inhabitants. The text of the story is modified for its youngest fans, but it’s done in a masterful way that maintains the essence of the original story.
It starts with a furry version of the Seuss-inspired bird waking up a child (sleeping under a liftable flap) to celebrate his big day. A tightrope excursion that gives readers the chance to pull the animals along and to view the flower garden, which includes flowers that actually give off a sweet scent. The wheel on the side of the book can be moved to make the fish leap into the Ketchup-Mustard-Pool and to rub the towels back and forth to be sure everyone is dry.
Happy Birthday, Baby! is a charming adaption of a classic story that includes a number of the creative book interactions that enhance its appeal. It makes a wonderful birthday gift, or a surprise for an occasion that warrants a charming addition to a book collection.
