Duck and Goose: Colors!
by Tad Hills
Ages 1-3 22 pages Schwartz and Wade January 2015 Board book

Duck, Goose, Thistle, and Bluebird are exploring colors in their latest board book. “Duck is YELLOW like a field of buttercups,” “Bluebird is BLUE like the sky and the sea,” and “Thistle is GRAY, like some rocks and the sky on a cloudy day.”

Green is shown with an inchworm and leaves. Orange is compared to Duck’s feet (which are sticking up in the air), a pumpkin, a carrot, and Goose’s sun hat. The book ends with the colors purple, black, red and white.

Each two-page spread has illustrations that were rendered in oil paint and colored pencils. The birds are all outside enjoying the summer weather. Duck and Goose play in the sand with a red pail on the beach. While Goose is eating purple grapes, a purple butterfly lands on Goose’s beak.

Children will see that by examining nature closely (like Goose does when watching the black ants and green inchworm), you can learn about your surroundings and have fun doing it! The book ends with the friends looking up at the white clouds in the sky. Duck and Goose books are too cute and humorous to pass by.
