Stella and Frances are unlikely best friends, but friends in the truest sense of the word. Stella is adventurous, out to make the most of every experience and every opportunity. Frances is more the stay-at-home, wait-for-life-to-come-get-you type. It is most often Stella, not life, that comes to get her.
That’s why today Frances is spending time picking out a dress for their prom in a couple of months. Stella has determined that (even though they both hate the idea) the prom is an experience that can't be ignored. The time for procrastination is over, and Stella sends Frances in search of the most perfect dress, even though Frances would rather be out biking with Stella, preparing for next week’s bike ride that Stella has signed them up for. The ride is a fundraiser for childhood cancers, but it is also a way for Stella to check off some of the “bucket list” items that she has been working on.
When the call comes from Stella’s father, Frances is still in the prom dress but she races to the hospital to see Stella. Thinking that the accident will have left Stella bruised and scratched but anxious to go home, Frances is unprepared for the injuries that Stella has sustained.
To combat the guilt she feels for having been at the dress shop rather than biking with Stella when the accident happened, Frances takes on the bike ride and Stella’s “bucket list,” even though both will take her out of her comfort zone. This storyline brings the typical moments of teenage angst and relationship stumbles, but it is atypical in the view of friendship between these two girls and the way that they grow because of that friendship.
Teen readers will enjoy this story and the relatable main characters. Included in this volume is the first chapter of Clark's How To Meet Boys.
