An Excessive Alphabet: Avalanches of As to Zillions of Zs
by Judi Barrett, illustrated by Ron Barrett
Ages 2-6 40 pages Atheneum October 2016 Hardcover

The Barretts' (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) new alphabet picture book combines letters with new vocabulary and impressive artwork. Each page focuses on one letter of the alphabet.

There are boatloads of Bs and cans of Cs, flocks of Fs and globs of Gs. The jumbles of Js are part of a computer game and the oodles of Os are in soup bowls. The herds of Hs blend in with the horses and hippos, and floating on the islands shaped like the letter I are iguanas, ice skates, and irons.

All the items to be found in the pen-and-ink illustrations are listed on the end pages of the book. An extra “I Spy” activity on the last page of the book will have readers going through the book for a second time. This would make a great addition to any library collection because it is informative and fun for a wide age range of children.
