In this engaging picture book, Sandra Markle tells the story of how wolves were restored to Yellowstone National Park. The young wolf Female 7 was captured in Canada and released in Yellowstone where she, along with Male 2, established the Leopold wolf pack.
The narrative follows Female 7 from the time she is released in the 2.2 million-acre area through the acclimation process during which she learns to fend for herself to the time when she encounters her mate.
Female 7’s four pups were the foundation for what eventually became the largest and strongest pack in the park. When conservationists decided it was time to reintroduce wolves into Yellowstone to return the natural balance in 1995, there were only an estimated 14 wolves in the entire region. That number has appreciably increased.
Any youngster interested in wildlife and nature will enjoy this book. It can also be used by parents and educators to initiate a dialogue on endangered species, man’s impact on the environment and the importance of maintaining balance in nature.
