I very much enjoyed To Save the World, the first book in "The Arkha Chronicles" by Heather Hayashi. In it, three powerful and strangely gifted Earth-women are brought to Arhka where the very bonds of their relationships are tested. Two distantly related humanoid races, the Vampires and Teregians, continue a war that has been going on for generations, while the Derus and Dragons battle a violent unknown species. The three women are able to tap into a power source known as Ith’rya, and with their combined strength they unite the people of Arhka.
The story continues in The Forgotten Past , with the invading species playing a larger role in the tale. We learn another side to the battle’s tale, and the characters are pushed even further, testing their courage and strength. Joined by two strong male characters, they reach beyond their wildest dreams… or nightmares.
While The Forgotten Past is missing something that the first book had, it's worth the time it takes for the reading experience. Some sections are a little long-winded; I caught myself skipping pages. All in all, I would recommend the book – especially if readers have access to the first volume of the series.
Both books feature colorful art on the protective slipcover. This series of hardcover books are easy-to-read with a nice sized font that increases the appeal to the young adult and youth audience. Author Heather Hayashi, who focuses on writing science fiction literature for female fans of the adventure fantasy genre, uses a style loaded with strong female characters and explores deeper understanding of human relationships.
