I love young adults books, especially fantasy. The authors generally weave great stories unmarred by extraneous sex and violence. This book is no exception.
The premise is sort of like Freaky Friday: uber-popular Amanda Beeson is the Queen of the Mean Girls. She also has a secret. She became a mean girl because if she feels sorry for someone, she becomes them. She takes over their body and has no idea how to get herself back; it just happens.
She learns to have no feelings for anyone - until she does. Tracey Devon is the invisible girl, and Amanda wakes up one day in Tracey’s body. She realizes she’s going to have to stay Tracey for awhile, so she tries to improve Tracey’s life while she’s at it.
Author Marilyn Kaye does a great job of writing the way my 12-year-old nephew and his friends talk. She must have a ‘tween in the family. The characters are so fully developed, so interesting that, as an adult reader, I nearly forgot that I was reading about 12 and 13-year-olds. I have the second of this series, and I can’t wait to read it. I’m hoping that the third is also already published and I can get that, too!
