Good News, Bad News
by Jeff Mack
Ages 3+ 40 pages Chronicle Books July 2012 Hardcover

Jeff Mack’s (Hush Little Polar Bear) newest picture book is a positive story about friendship. Rabbit is ready to go on a picnic with Mouse—even if it rains or is invaded by bees and a bear.

As the calamities worsen during their outing though, so does Mouse’s distress. “Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad news!” he shouts after he’s been coated in icing and struck by lightning. Rabbit’s reaction will remind children that words have power.

Full-page mixed media illustrations depict alternating scenes of enjoyable and terrible situations that could happen on a picnic. The friendship in this book is based on acceptance and wanting what is best for each other, and that is a story worth sharing with children. Pair this with Fortunately, Unfortunately (Michael Foreman) for a longer story that contains setbacks and triumphs.
