The vehicles on the construction site are busy working throughout the day. As the sun sets, they wrap up their jobs and prepare for bed.
Crane finishes lifting beams before he goes to sleep with his teddy bear and night light. Cement Mixer washes himself off with a hose after emptying his last load, and Excavator snuggles into his bed of sand after he stretches and yawns. It may be quieter on the construction site now that all the work has stopped but Dump Truck’s snoring is loud enough to wake a man from the neighboring building.
This bedtime story, told in rhyme, explains what each vehicle does while on the job, but there is no mention of female vehicles in the story. Lichtenheld’s (Duck! Rabbit!) Neocolor wax oil pastel illustrations show a number of vehicles working against a beautiful red sunset. When the sun is down, a sleepy crescent moon emerges to light the city sky.
Children can participate in this story by repeating the phrase “Shh… goodnight” after each vehicle closes its eyes for the night.
