Baby-PreK 26 pages Robin Corey Books March 2011 Board book

The first pages of this sturdy board book show a youthful grandma tickling her giggling grandchild. The accompanying text reads “Grandma calls me Gigglepie…a treat that’s sweet and funny.”

This is followed by two-page spreads of animal pairs frolicking in their natural settings, with rhyming verse naming cute and funny nicknames that grandmas have for their little ones. For instance, a “tricky chick” flamingo baby stands on one leg and shows off for an adult flock, and a “snaggletooth” baby snake hatches out of its egg while an adult snake watches patiently. The grandma owl watches over her wise “smarty pants” owlet in its nest.

On the final pages, grandma and the child are back again, here cuddling during a picnic a deux, and the text says, “Grandma calls me Gigglepie…because she loves me so!” --- a sweet ending to a gentle and playful book that celebrates the love that grandparents and children have for each other.

Hiroe Nakata’s charming illustrations portraying cute animals in their natural habitat are pleasing to the eye. Other books in the series are Mommy Calls Me Monkeypants and Daddy Calls Me Doodlebug.
