Willy has just moved into a new house near the large Grenadier Pond. He enjoys sitting on a bench each evening, feeding bread crusts to the ducks. One day, as he’s throwing crusts, he notices everything become completely silent. A gigantic creature comes up right out of the pond and gently eats the bread crusts from Willy’s hand. The next night, Willy returns and so does the creature. After Willy tells his parents, it becomes a media circus—television, tourists, and curious people all want to catch a glimpse of the creature in the pond. What can Willy do to help the creature?
The Sea Serpent of Grenadier Pond is a cute story that will appeal to young children. The reading level is probably right for grades two and three, but the interest level is much wider. The illustrations will help children visualize the scope of the creature’s size and really add to the enjoyment of the book. The only distraction is that the quotes accompanying the illustrations sometimes come before the text and can be confusing. Otherwise, this delightful story will be enjoyed by both boys and girls with active imaginations and senses of adventure.
