This lift-the-flap board book teaches toddlers and preschoolers the names of seven flowers (tulip, daisy, cherry blossom, marigold, dandelion, snowdrop, pansy) and seven animals (kitten, sheep, snake, rooster, lion, polar bear, butterfly).
As the reader studies the page and compares the two almost identical-looking flowers on each double-page spread, they are prompted to answer a question about what’s under the flap. “Is it a tulip? Guess what? Lift the flap…” The yellow tulip looks like the red tulip beside it, but when the flap is opened to widen the page, you see the tulip is really a little kitten.
The next page shows four daisies. “Are they daisies? Guess what? Lift the flap…” When the flap covering the daisies is pulled downward, you watch a sheep appear.
The design of this book is clever, and challenging at times. It’s not likely that anyone will guess there is a pink snake under the cherry blossom, but someone might think of a lion under the dandelion because the mane looks like the flower.
There are only a few words on each page, but the animals are paired with a descriptive word (proud lion, crowing rooster). The backgrounds are white and the text is black. The colorful illustrations are outlined in thick black lines.
Pair this book with Guess What? Sweets and Treats by the same author, and you will have an enrapt audience.
