Guess What?--Sweets and Treats (Yonezu, Guess What? Board Books)
by Yusuke Yonezu
Ages 0-3 28 pages minedition March 2015 Board book

This is a cool board book! The foods inside change into animals when the flaps are open.

“Is it a cinnamon bun? Guess what? Lift the flap…” When children open the flap, they will see that the cinnamon bun is really the curled-up tail on a squirrel. “It’s a squirrel with a nut.”

I was not surprised that the orange-and-white candy turned into a pair of clownfish, or a chocolate bar was a tortoise, but I chuckled with delight when I saw the strawberry cake was hiding a crab (her claws were the berries) and the bear was a doughnut (his nose was the doughnut hole).

The second-last double-page spread includes the only two people in the book--but at first glance, with the flaps closed, they look like ice cream cones. The back page is a wordless collage of the animals and children posing with their sweets.

The cover of this book and Guess What?--Flowers look plain compared to some other board book covers, but don’t let this stop you from purchasing them for your public library or home library. They are among the best I have read in a long time.
