The Hanukkah Hop!

Ages 3-6 32 pages Simon and Schuster October 2011 Hardcover

Everyone brings their own style to their personal Hanukkah celebration. The particular family showcased in The Hanukkah Hop! hosts a rowdy party for their family and friends.

As the guests make their way to the family home, the family makes the preparations: hanging decorations, clearing space for dancing, and cooking the traditional feast. Once the guests arrive the candles are lit, the songs are sung, the story of the Maccabees is told, the latkes and applesauce are eaten, and the dreidls are spun.

The party doesn’t shift into full gear, however, until the band the “Mazel-Tones” arrives and play the “Hanukkah Hop” for the house of guests—a dance which lasts until the party-goers are thoroughly exhausted from the truly festive celebration.

The Hanukkah Hop! is a sweet story with vibrant illustrations that take readers through the entire cycle of their party. The book’s simple text and charming illustrations will elicit much laughter and joy from anyone who thinks that the holiday calls for anything but a vibrant celebration—a great way to teach its readers just how much fun Hanukkah can be.
