The child in this picture book enjoys a variety of Halloween activities with family and friends. At home, the day begins with a meal of homemade pumpkin waffles, jack-o’-lantern carving, and costume designing.
In the evening, the child plays Halloween games at a party and goes trick-or-treating with friends. When she returns home, the little girl (who always has her hair in pigtails) then prepares for bed by putting away her costume, candy, and thoughts of “ghosts or vampires or witches.”
Bright colors are used in the illustrations and in the rectangles of color that appear behind the text. The story is narrated in the voice of the child, and the illustrations include the family’s curious black cat.
Slegers makes this book useful for children and parents looking for Halloween inspirations by including ideas for turning a balloon into a spider, using flashlights during a ghost-hunt, and a way to say “Trick or Treat” in a memorable way.
Slegers is the author and illustrator of many children’s picture books including the On My Way books and the Kevin & Katie series.
