Hat
by Paul Hoppe
Ages 4-8 32 pages Bloomsbury USA March 2009 Hardcover

One day, Henry finds a large red hat on a bench in the park. The hat fits him so well. It could be such a useful hat…it could shield him from the sun and the rain, could turn into a boat or a mouse-catcher as needed, and it could even save his life. Indeed, this hat could turn him into a superstar!

But his mother interjects, “…what if someone else needs this hat?” Might the hat be of more use to a dancer in the spotlight, an intrepid explorer facing a hungry alligator, or a magician who’s out of tricks? Henry ponders this question and finally decides what he should do with the big red hat.

Hat is a charming and whimsical little book. The text is succinct and the drawings are engaging. Hat is an ode to the imagination of small children everywhere.

Paul Hoppe has illustrated many previous works, but this is his first book as both author and illustrator.
