James Howe and Marie-Louise Gay team up again for another installment in the Houndsley and Catina series. This new book, Houndsley and Catina and the Quiet Time , is another success for them. The first book is a real added treasure to the children’s literary world, and this new book measures up to the high standards set by its predecessor.
Howe brings readers into a cold, blustery, and very quiet day. Snow has been falling thickly, and Houndsley and Catina are holed up inside, waiting out the storm. There are many views to take on such a situation, and Houndsley is easy about it: he likes the quiet and peacefulness of the snow.
Catina, on the other hand, itches to complete errands in preparation for that evening's big event. Over the course of the day, they talk together, enjoy some indoor activities, and both find pleasure in the serenity of the falling snow while warming their fur by the crackling fire. As for the big event…what will be, will be, and there's no point in worrying about it.
Houndsley and Catina and the Quiet Time is another delightful, well-written introductory chapter book. The adorable illustrations remind me greatly of Holly Hobbie's Toot and Puddle works. The simple sentences and vocabulary give beginning readers a chance to succeed, and the format of the book includes a contents page as well as chapters, ideal for those in the K-3 age range beginning to branch out of plain picture books. I look forward to future installments in the Houndsley and Catina series.
